Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,
Monday, April 19, marks the beginning of the fourth quarter, and we are so excited to welcome tens of thousands of elementary and high school students back to the classroom. As of Monday, all students from pre-k through 12th-grade who want to learn in person will be able to do so. This milestone has been more than a year in the making and is truly a cause for celebration.
We thank our partners at the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) for working with the district to reach an agreement that will allow us to safely reopen our schools. We understand, however, that moving past the pandemic will require even more substantial resources, and we look forward to sharing the district’s plan to ensure all students, staff, and families have what they need to heal from the past year and move forward toward a brighter future.

Supporting Students During TragedyOn March 29, 2021, a 13-year-old student from Gary Elementary School was shot and killed by a Chicago Police Officer. The student’s name was Adam Toledo, and he was a member of our CPS family. His death, along with release of the bodycam footage, are raising many emotions for our students, and are compounding what has already been a stressful and unprecedented time.
To meet our children where they are, CPS developed Supporting Students: Adam Toledo, a guidance document that includes a set of professional and mental health resources to help our educators create a safe space where students can ask questions and express their feelings freely. In addition, this guidance will support staff in addressing the social and emotional needs of our children, and will help them ensure sensitive issues and differing points of view are handled with the appropriate thoughtfulness and care. Vaccination OpportunitiesMy Block, My Hood, My City has partnered with the Chicago Vaccine Angels to help all Chicagoans get access to a vaccine appointment. A group of volunteers will secure you an appointment for a time and location that works best for you and even help with transportation if needed. A Look Inside Our Schools This Week

Demari, an eighth-grader at Manierre Elementary, says he has been giving out great energy since being back at school. He has a list of goals that extend far beyond elementary school: get a college scholarship, study anatomy, and become a doctor or a surgeon. To reach those goals, he plans to rely on the same skills that he’s developed at Manierre, such as staying focused in class by participating and answering questions.

Hancock High School students Rachel, Evie, and Alex have been reflecting on how the challenges of the past year have helped them grow. Even though it’s been difficult for them to receive the same level of support from their teachers and peers while learning from home, they’ve each tried to focus on the positives. Now that they have the opportunity to go back to Hancock, they’ll have new healthy habits and strategies to take with them.

Meet our newest chess champion! Betty is an eighth-grade student at Parkside Academy in South Shore. While she’s only been playing chess for two years, she’s worked hard alongside one of her teachers to master the game. Her favorite piece is the rook (castle) and she has a chess ranking of 1500, making her one of the district’s top elementary school chess players. She’s looking forward to continuing to play chess in high school and is always willing to offer advice to new players.

Estimada familia de CPS:
El lunes 19 de abril comienza el cuarto trimestre, por lo que nos emociona recibir nuevamente en las aulas a decenas de miles de estudiantes de primaria y secundaria. A partir del lunes, todos los estudiantes, desde prekínder hasta 12.º grado, que deseen participar en las clases presenciales podrán hacerlo. Este hito se ha ido logrando hace más de un año y es un verdadero motivo de celebración.
Agradecemos a nuestros socios del Sindicato de Maestros de Chicago (CTU, por sus siglas en inglés) que hayan trabajado con el distrito para llegar a un acuerdo que nos permita reabrir nuestras escuelas de manera segura. Sin embargo, entendemos que para superar la pandemia se requerirán recursos más importantes, por lo que compartiremos pronto nuestro plan para ayudar a todos los estudiantes, el personal y las familias a recuperarse del año pasado y a avanzar hacia un futuro más brillante.

Apoyo a los estudiantes durante tragediasEl 29 de marzo de 2021, un estudiante de 13 años de la Escuela Primaria de Gary fue asesinado por un oficial de policía de Chicago. Demari, estudiante de octavo grado de Manierre Elementary, dice que desde que ha vuelto a la escuela se ha vigorizado. Tiene una lista de objetivos que desea alcanzar después de la escuela primaria, como: conseguir una beca universitaria, estudiar anatomía y convertirse en médico o cirujano. Para ello, piensa aplicar las mismas habilidades que ha desarrollado en Manierre, como esmerarse en la clase participando y respondiendo preguntas.

Rachel Evie y Alex, estudiantes de Hancock High School, han reflexionado sobre cómo los desafíos del año pasado les han ayudado a crecer. Aunque les ha sido difícil recibir el mismo nivel de apoyo de parte de sus maestros y compañeros, durante el aprendizaje a distancia, todos han tratado de enfocarse en los aspectos positivos. Ahora que tienen la oportunidad de volver a Hancock, pondrán en práctica nuevos hábitos y estrategias.

¡Conoce a nuestra nueva campeona de ajedrez! Betty es una estudiante de octavo grado de Parkside Academy, ubicada en South Shore. Aunque sólo lleva dos años jugando al ajedrez, ha trabajado arduamente junto a uno de sus maestros para dominarlo. Su pieza favorita es la torre (el castillo), y tiene una clasificación de ajedrez de 1500, lo que la convierte en una de las mejores jugadoras de ajedrez de primaria del distrito. Ella desea seguir jugando en la secundaria y está dispuesta a ofrecerles consejos a nuevos jugadores.
